BELLE FOURCHE — The Belle Fourche Development Corp. has signed an agreement with the Butte County Regional Railroad Authority to lease the railroad siding that connects the Belle Fourche Industrial & Rail Park with the Rapid City, Pierre & Eastern Railroad line that runs through the city.
Now the BFDC can work directly with prospective rail users who have an interest in building trackside facilities.
The rail authority, as a government agency, was unable to negotiate directly and privately with prospective users of the rail facility, said Hollie Stalder, executive director of the Belle Fourche Economic Development Corp. Privacy is a concern for businesses who don’t want to reveal their plans to competitors.
The 79-acre Belle Fourche Industrial & Rail Park makes it easier for businesses to transport goods by rail. About a half a mile of siding track and a rail spur have been constructed, connecting the Rapid City, Pierre & Eastern rail line to the business park.
Raw materials or finished goods can be delivered by rail to the industrial park and later transported by truck to their final destination. Likewise, products produced in the Rushmore Region can be loaded onto train cars and shipped to buyers.
