What once was the sleepy little town of Box Elder has boomed to 10,000-plus citizens, and continues to be the second fastest growing community in the state with a growth rate more than 25percent since 2010. Box Elder has an exceptional amount of affordable land, which has attracted several local developers to invest in housing and commercial properties.
Today the city has five active housing developments in addition to commercial lots being developed to promote economic growth along Liberty Boulevard, and on the west edge of the community the extension of East Mall Drive will begin in spring, promoting commercial and light industrial business ventures. Over the last couple of years, the city has taken an active role in planning and improving infrastructure to support the growth of the community.
This year local residents will see a new 174-room Courtyard Hotel rise near Exit 61, a new veterinary clinic will open at the corner of Liberty & Prairie road this spring, in addition to construction beginning on a new medical clinic at Liberty and Villa Drive.
The City has developed a $10 million Master Community Park plan which will elevate the quality of life for its citizens over the coming years. This park will include baseball field for all skill levels and ages, soccer fields, basketball courts, a water feature, BMX and skateboard park, a little league football field, pavilions, walking/biking trails and a wellness center.
The city continues to work closely with the Ellsworth AFB and Ellsworth Development Authority to seek out business that not only supports the community’s economic growth, but also supports the mission of the base and the quality of life for the airman serving our country.
