Spearfish Voted One of Top 15 Most Livable Hiking Towns in America

SPEARFISH, S.D. (KOTA TV) - Spearfish has received national attention for the landscape the town offers. It was voted as one of the top 15 most livable hiking towns in America.
“It's fun to be recognized for what we know we are,” said Visit Spearfish Executive Director Mistie Caldwell. “It's great to have that outdoor feel, clean air activities, that's what Spearfish is about. So, it's always wonderful to be acknowledged for what we know is why we live here and why we work here. It's a great place."
Spearfish is known as the Queen City's Crown which is made up of Lookout Mountain, Spearfish Peak and Crow Peak.
“There are so many hiking trails around I couldn't list them all and you would have a whole show on that, but the thing that makes it cool is they are close,” said Black Hills State University Outdoor Education Program Coordinator Chris McCart. “They are right outside of town. You can go just across the interstate and be on Lookout Mountain. You can be just two miles up and be in the forest service. There are a ton of trails right in this area."
The landscape brings in many visitors to the area which ends up benefiting the locals.
"Running a seven day a week visitors center, that is our number one request is how can we hike the area?” Caldwell said. “So, by those people coming here and knowing it's a hiking destination, by default they are also going to visit our retailers, they are going to go to our stores, get gas, go to the bike shops, all of those things.".
Now, to get on the list you had to be able to be a livable place too.
"Living here really is being part of that outdoor culture and also arts, education, great food culture, beer culture, we kind of have a home grown feel,” Caldwell added. “People are proud of what we grow locally, what we sell locally, so yeah, it still has that small town feel with a lot of amenities.”
Spearfish has a number of trails throughout the city including Devil's Bathtub, Community Caves, and 11th Hour Gulch to name a few.
