The Rushmore Region and surrounding area are home to an abundance of natural resources, creating a natural fit for extractive-based industries. In fact, one in four of all top industry prospects found for the Rushmore Region are directly related to the energy and extractive sector.

The energy and extractive industry (fossils and renewable sources) in the Rushmore Region is represented by:

  • Gas and mining operations
  • Electrical power generation
  • Related manufacturing and wholesale industries

Energy and extractive industry in the Rushmore Region:

  • One in four of all top industry prospects found for the Rushmore Region are directly related to the energy and extractive sector
  • Extractive based industries added 565 new jobs from 2006 to 2011 with average earnings of $57,200/year, and a total impact of $30.3 million on regional earnings
  • Coal mining and oil and natural gas extraction were top growing industries in the region, adding 148 new jobs and $10.7 million in earnings from 2006 to 2011
  • Several major projects slated for the Rushmore Region or nearby (i.e. Keystone XL pipeline and American Electric Powers 765 kV electric transmission line running through the Rushmore Region)
