Northern Hills Hub
Whitewood, halfway between Sturgis and Spearfish, got its start in 1887 as a transportation hub for the gold mining camps of the Northern Black Hills. The town still has rail service on the line that runs from Belle Fourche to Rapid City.
Whitewood's 2012 population was estimated at 934. Most work outside the city: Whitewood is within easy commuting distance from Spearfish, Sturgis and Deadwood. However, there are some home-based businesses in town.
One of the city's main employers is Hills Products Group. The company has a state-of-the-art, computer managed wood preservation plant in Whitewood. Dimensional lumber, wood fence posts, guardrail stock and rough timbers are pressure-treated to withstand the weather.
The tight-knit community gathers at the Hale Hall for community events, the Whitewood Public Library and, in summer, the city's two parks.
