Folks in the Rushmore Region work hard, but they also play hard. Every corner of the region hosts an annual event that draws people from throughout the region, as well as the nation. Here's a sampling of the annual festivities.
Crazy Horse Volksmarch
Early June, late September
The Crazy Horse Volksmarch is an organized or 6.2-mile hike through the woods ramble to stand on the outstretched arm of Crazy Horse, the world’s largest mountain carving in progress. This is the only time each year that the public may hike to the mountain carving, which is near Custer.
Black Hills Film Festival
The Black Hills Film Festival showcases the newest voices in independent film. Classes are taught by notable professionals and forums for film artists to sharpen their craft and share their skill.
Black Hills Fat Tire Festival
The Fat Tire Festival is a celebration of everything on two wheels – no motors, thank you. Mountain bikers from throughout the region gather in the Black Hills for single-track tours, competitive races and social events.
Black Hills Roundup
One of the oldest continuously held outdoor rodeos in America, the Black Hills Roundup includes five days of events such as barrel racing, bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, bull riding and team roping.
Spearfish Festival in the Park
The Festival in the Park is one of the largest outdoor summer arts festivals in the upper Midwest. Over 20,000 people attend to see live entertainment, artist demonstrations and children's activities. The Festival features over 150 craft, arts and 25 food booths.
Days of ‘76 Celebration
For 10 straight years, the Days of ’76 Rodeo has been named the best medium-sized rodeo of the year by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. The Deadwood event also includes parades and parties in downtown Deadwood.
Sturgis Motorcycle Rally
Despite all the concerts, famous performers, bike shows and street vendors, the Sturgis Motorcycle is still all about the ride. Every year, hundreds of thousands of people come from all over the world to tour the winding mountain roads and open prairie highways of the Rushmore Region. For one week a year, everybody is a biker.
Southern Hills Triathlon
Labor Day Weekend
The race is held at Angostura State Recreation Area south of Hot Springs. Triathletes from across the country test themselves in the running, biking and swimming competition.
Feel the thunder and join the herd at the annual Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup. Watch cowboys and cowgirls as they roundup and drive the herd of approximately 1,300 buffalo (number of animals vary depending on rangeland conditions). Not only is the roundup a spectacular sight to see, it is also a critical management tool in maintaining a strong and healthy herd.
