Transportation Infrastructure


The Rushmore Region has access to the following Interstates and highways:

  • Interstate 90
  • Highways 16 and 44
  • South Dakota Highway 79
  • Highway 79 is being expanded to a four-lane highway (Heartland Express)
  • Highway 85 – Theodore Roosevelt Expressway
    • The TRE begins in Rapid City and flows through the cities of Spearfish, Belle Fourche, Bowman, Belfield, Watford City, Williston, Culbertson, Plentywood, and finally through the Port of Raymond into Canada

A non-profit, non-partisan, community-driven advocacy group from a nine-state, 2300-plus mile economic development corridor between Texas, and Alberta, Canada, that collaborates with federal and state leaders, partners in Canada and Mexico, and industry partners, to deliver the infrastructure, food and fuel to secure the quality of life of America's great cities

More than 30 transport companies provide interstate and intrastate motor freight. As a result, the Rushmore Region has promising opportunities for the export of goods from the area.


Rapid City Regional Airport, eight miles east of Rapid City, services the entire Rushmore Region. The airport is served by the following carriers:

  • American Airlines, with service to:
    Dallas/Fort Worth, TX - Chicago, IL - Charlotte, NC
  • Delta Airlines, with service to:
    Salt Lake City, UT - Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN - Atlanta, GA (seasonal)
  • United Airlines, with service to:
    Denver, CO - Chicago, IL - Houston, TX (seasonal)
  • Allegiant Airlines, with twice weekly service to:
    Las Vegas, NV - Phoenix, AZ

The Black Hills Air Service Partnership is a cooperative and voluntary partnership of regional associations, businesses, communities and individuals dedicated to improving and retaining air service to and from the Black Hills to support the economic well-being of the entire Rushmore Region.

Currently the Rapid City, Pierre & Eastern and BNSF railroads operate lines in the Rushmore Region for the purpose of transporting intermodal freight and bulk cargo. RCP&E operates the former Canadian Pacific (DM&E) line, while BNSF operates a line that runs through the southwest corner of the Black Hills. Rapid City, Pierre & Eastern Lines Through South Dakota
